Winning hearts every time they step on stage or whenever someone hears their incredible debut, Rough Master, or their stunner of a sophomore record, Tuning, Mauno are one of this country’s best. These cats from Halifax recall the smart, introspective guitar rock of Chad VanGaalen and Jon McKiel while bringing something new to the table. If you’ve seen them, they already have your heart. If not, prepare to have them win yours.
The Highest Order are a psychedelic country rock (in that order) band based in Tkaronto, consisting of Simone TB (drums), Paul Mortimer (vox, guitar) Kyle Connolly (vox, bass), and Simone Schmidt (voice, guitar). It's the songs that stay with you, fully realized as though they've always existed, vessels for Schmidt’s words. Athletic metaphors. Deep truths. Their 3rd LP, "Farewell to The Silver Dollar" will be out before the end of 2018.
LALare a radical Black and Brown duo from Toronto. Through their exploration of a dynamic range of diasporic rhythms, they've developed a sound that ingeniously integrates their South Asian and West Indian roots with Jazz sensibilities, Hip-Hop and authentic Soul. THE NEVER BETTERS
Never Betters is a punk band from London, Ontario, Canada. The band features two lyricists, Davita Guslits and April Romano, who go on to perform as drummer and front woman after sifting through their well-used journals. Their poetic words and catchy melodies are complemented crunchy tones and incendiary riffs. None of the members are new to the game; each come from past staples of the Southwestern Ontario punk scene and split their creative energies between other killer current projects. Never Betters have dubbed themselves as post-pop-punk when prodded; while not totally satisfied by the description, it certainly reflects the bands’ ability to evade definition within the broad umbrellas of alternative and punk music.
MY FATHER's Son
My Father’s Son, an indie folk group with roots in London, ON and Montreal, QC, melds together intricate lyrics with the richness of simplified, acoustic sound. An air of storytelling colours the music with sentimental and wholly relatable verses that immerse the audience in the beauty of shared experiences.
From a secluded outpost on Nova Scotia’s mystical South Shore, junked-analog duo JOYFULTALK conjure micro-climate trance music. The brainchild of instrument builder and jazz-fried alchemist Jay Crocker, JOYFULTALK offer up new concepts on regionalism. Admittedly influenced by the craggy treelines and flowing rivers of Lunenburg county, Crocker and multi-instrumentalist Shawn Dicey’s gnarled jamscapes render natural spaces in a hazy parallel universe.
Luna Li has been called the garage rock princess of Toronto (Mick Magazine), playing regularly with her band at shows and festivals around Ontario and Quebec. In August 2017, Luna won the SOCAN Foundation Award for Young Canadian Songwriters with her single Star Stuff. With over 14 years of classical piano and violin training, Luna brings a unique musical sensibility to the rock genre; playing both violin with a looping pedal as well as fuzzy guitar solos, resulting in a “dreamy romp through some beautiful melodies and heartbreaking lyrics” (Deli Magazine).
SLOW attack ensemble
Slow Attack Ensemble is the latest project from Chuck Blazevic (You’ll Never Get To Heaven, Dreamsploitation). It grew out of a fascination with the raw intimacy and subdued character of anomalous vintage ambient recordings. They explore this landscape through spare application of delay-laden instruments, building angular rhythms and haunting melodies out of resonance and decay.
